      • May 05, 2017 · Long story short, I have been building this shitty DRZ on a budget. Bought it cheap without a title, swapped the frame, and now I'm here! I cleaned the carb twice. I noticed the jets are pretty rich at a 30 pilot and I think a 162.5 main. Most people with my mods (3x3, FMF muffler) are running 22.5 or 25 and around 145-150.
      • my drz 400 does this DO NOT! use it get it down to a garage mine is that lean the piston got that hot the ring got sucked in and split the piston melted onto the barrel so try to not use it as it cost alot of money all because at the top of the carb it has a crack where was sucking to much air for fuel making it starve the engine the over heats causing this problem cost me 650£ !

We found that at idle and just off idle in the 0-20% throttle range our pipe was running extremely lean, though at wide-open throttle we were a bit too rich.
      • Jul 05, 2017 · Adding a bigger tank is only part of increasing your range. The bike’s jetting is a big deal. When we first got this DR-Z400S, it was running poorly, lowering the bike’s gas mileage. It ran lean down low, rich at high RPM, and just didn’t feel right. So we put in a jet kit from JD Jetting.

      • Hey I am a new drz 400 e owner and I have found a couple of problems.. The bike does not return to idle when the clutch is pulled and the throttle is closed. But once a little clutch pressure is applied the bike will return to idle.

      • As much as everybody says "kill it at high rpm". I've always had good luck tuning by running the w00ter out of it, then pull it back in the shop. Unless you're extremely fat or lean on the bottom it won't change the plug color. Also, knowing the proper way to read a plug will let you tune from my method of "rip it and park it".
    • yea mate that's fine. I have 3 bikes (all 400E) and run that and never had a problem. when you flush the bike, lean it over to water pump side (about 45 degrees) to make sure you get all the old coolant out when flushing, and all the water out before re-filling.

      • Oct 08, 2019 · If you don't already have the JD jet kit, and stock jetting you're running lean at sea level. Probably only slightly, but still lean. Going up in elevation will only alleviate anemic jetting but only to an extent. Probably about 3-4000' you were spot on. Another thing that helps is your CV (constant velocity) carb.

    • The stock DRZ muffler is renowned for being quite, efficient, and albeit heavy. As others have said, if you want the best mileage, do absolutely nothing, except perhaps gearing higher if you can stand the loss of low-speed flexibility. In stock form, the bike is jetted very lean which is exactly what you want for mileage.

As we all know, a bike that ticks all the boxes and is considered the perfect adventure bike is a mythical machine. However, the DRZ400 does a pretty good job of ticking a good portion of those boxes and can be considered a pretty good adventure bike for riders who enjoy routes that lean more towards off-road riding. i got some problems with the take off on my 2002 DRZ-400, when at a dead stop on take off its like its not getting the gas, ive tried to lean and richen the fuel mix but it did not help.
