O.K. I've read Norm's article on belt sizing, and it sort of mentions tension...But I would like to know what the proper tension is supposed to be. I have always used the 1" rule of thumb, but recently found a belt tension gauge in my truck. Every time it starts up it squeals badly. You know that in a car this signifies that a belt is loose and slipping. In a forced air system, squeaking signifies the same thing. If you’re hearing squeaking or squealing every time the furnace blower starts up, you will need to re-tension the belt that drives the blower fan.

Serpentine belts have replaced multiple V-belts because a single belt is more compact, cheaper and simpler to install than multiple belts. By snaking around the various pulleys, both sides of a serpentine belt can grip and turn the pulleys on the alternator, water pump, A/C compressor and power steering pump. on the V-belt drive components.
